Methodology

How HomeCostGuide estimates project costs

HomeCostGuide is built for early budgeting. The calculators are designed to help homeowners compare project scope, understand common cost drivers, and prepare better questions before contacting local contractors.

What the calculators include

Each calculator starts with a practical unit of work, such as square footage, linear footage, room count, window count, system size, or project area. The estimate then applies project-specific choices like material type, finish level, complexity, removal needs, or system requirements.

The result is shown as a planning range rather than a single exact price because real quotes can change based on local labor rates, jobsite access, existing conditions, code requirements, disposal, and contractor availability.

How regional adjustments work

Optional ZIP code entry is used only to apply a broad regional cost adjustment. It is not a contractor quote, local permit lookup, or address-level estimate. The adjustment is meant to keep national-average ranges from feeling too low in higher-cost areas or too high in lower-cost areas.

What the estimates do not include

  • Hidden damage discovered after demolition or removal.
  • Permit fees, engineering, design work, surveys, or utility company charges unless noted.
  • Premium brands, custom fabrication, emergency work, or unusually difficult access.
  • Local tax, financing, temporary housing, or project delays.

How to use the results

Use the estimate as a starting point for scope planning. Before hiring, compare written quotes that describe the same materials, removal work, prep, cleanup, warranty, and exclusions. If one quote is much lower than the others, ask what is missing from the scope.

For deeper project planning, browse the cost guides, which explain the decisions that usually move a project toward the low or high end of the range.
